Hi loves!
As a woman living in the Philippines, I'm very proud of how beautiful our islands and the surrounding waters are. It is undeniable that we have one of the most beautiful and richest marine biodiversity in the world. Sadly, much degradation has happened in our seas and oceans from various causes, and some scientific studies mentioned that there are skincare ingredients toxic to our marine life.
As a makeup and skincare enthusiast, it is very alarming to know that what we put on our bodies is damaging our beautiful corals, resulting in the loss of food and habitat for many other sea creatures. So I'm currently trying to be more careful with what products I use, researching about products from reputable sources, and I also try to recycle the containers that can be recycled.
One evening, I received an email from the brand MAGWAI offering to let me try and review their new Sheer Mineral Sunscreen. If you're not familiar with MAGWAI, it is a Filipino brand whose mission is to create products "with the intention of helping protect the ocean by offering sustainable and accessible solutions." Sounds good right? What got me so excited is that I don't think I have tried a mineral sunscreen that is described as "sheer." To be honest, I never liked using mineral sunscreens because of the white or greyish residue it leaves behind when you apply it. So a sheer one is just so interesting!

MAGWAI Sheer Mineral Sunscreen SPF50+
I received the product around two weeks ago as a gift from the brand and I have been using it since. I wish I could have used it while swimming but the monsoon rains that happened last week made it impossible for me to go out of the house. So I was only able to use it for everyday wear going to work and then a few errands. In this post, I'll share with you the product descriptions and my honest to goodness review. :)
Below are the details at the back of the tube:
More info regarding this sunscreen from the brand itself is:
Upon looking at it, I love the design of it. It looks very much as how it describes its mission as ocean-friendly. The logo itself is simple but chic and the color and font choices go so well together.
I like that this is in tube form so you can easily squeeze the product out. It's also easier to make sure that you get to use up all of the product too! We gotta make sure we're efficient in using our products to not be wasteful.
This is how the product looks like. It may look thick but it is surprisingly light and you can easily spread it out. You might need to spread it a little bit longer compared to chemical sunscreens but still easier than most mineral ones. It's very easy to spread evenly as well and doesn't get patchy and dry too easily too!
It's very lightweight and the smell is faint. If I have to describe it, it's kinda like baking powder, but really, once it settles on skin, you hardly notice the scent.
Here's a side by side look on my hand. Left is my bare hand and the right has a pea-shape amount of the MAGWAI Sheer Mineral Sunscreen.
Here's another photo for reference:
Left has the sunscreen while my right hand is bare.
As you can see, the brand's claim of a sheer coverage is true!!! I was so kilig when I saw this finish. And let me just say, it's so refreshing to use as it has conquered all the things I didn't like about mineral sunscreens!
But of course, there is still a bit of white cast so I can't have that when I go out for work. So what do I do? Makeup of course!
Here's my bare cheek
My cheek with the sunscreen
My cheek with BB cream
Now here's where I'm not so happy about. I've tried it with BB Cream, tinted moisturizer, and a regular foundation and the finish looks unnatural. I always want my makeup to look like second skin but with the sunscreen on, I have to use a little bit of coverage to even it out and so far, I don't think I have any product that can pair well with it that won't make my face look like it's wearing a thick layer of makeup. What is worse is the areas that needed coverage (my chin area to be more specific) with concealer got cakey after half a day of wear.
If I do have to pick though, the BB cream looks best with it and then the tinted moisturizer. If you have fairer skin than I do, you probably don't even need to do this step since the cast it leaves behind is closer to your skin tone anyway.
Make sure to carefully follow the directions of use when applying any sunscreen to get its full effects. I make sure that I always wear SPF50 or higher because the sun is one of the leading causes of premature skin aging. And I do not want that! Haha! If you'll be out in the sun for a long period of time, it is recommended to reapply. For this particular product, you have to do it every 80 minutes. It's very easy to forget but always remember that sunscreen breaks when exposed to the elements for a long time, specially when swimming!
And since I wasn't able to wear it while swimming, I just wore it on my arm and ran it through running water at home. I observed how it stuck on my skin for a few minutes and it stayed there and no noticeable "melting-off." In short, maganda ang kapit sa balat!
Throughout the day of wearing it, it felt comfortable on my skin. No lagkit (sticky) feeling and I didn't experience any irritation.
This sunscreen is available in two sizes:
80g is PhP 699.00
30g is PhP 339.00
If you wanna get your hands on it, it's available online on Shopee and Lazada and on the brand's website. You can also visit any Watsons store nationwide!
Any thoughts on the MAGWAI Sheer Mineral Sunscreen SPF50+?
Cheers,
DAWN
