My Top 3 Whitening Soaps: Dermablend, Belo and Cyleina

As a kid, I had the most tanned skin in our bunch. My 7-year old picture (that flagrantly boasts my star complex) above shows I am easily a NC35. Now, the shot beside it taken a week ago presents that I am a stable NC25 ---- light-skinned enough to be mistaken as Chinese (by a Chinese tourist group in Disneyland, California), Japanese (by OFWs in Japan when I was en route to Manila) and Korean (by Koreans in school). My mom is flabbergasted as to why I am whiter than all of my siblings ("Nung pinanganak kita ikaw pinaka-maitim! Bakit ka nagkaganyan?!").

Yes, I've experimented with Glutathione (oral and IV) and DIY bleaching treatments but I've never taken/done these on a regular basis. To keep myself consistently fair-skinned, I have relied on body scrubs and soaps (and lotions if I remember to put them on).

Anyway, these are my favorite soaps which I have been repurchasing over and over for the past years:

1. Dermablend Papaya Orange Skin Whitening Soap

This is the "Sam Milby Soap" - I always forget the name of this brand, so I always tell people who ask me what soap I use to buy the one with Sam Milby on the cover! This product allows for mild micropeeling and never fails to help whiten scars and exfoliate the body. The orangey scent is lovely, too. It can be a bit drying though, so I alternate with Belo. I buy mine in bulk at the grocery. I've tried the other orange/papaya soaps (Likas Papaya, Silka, Kojic, etc) but I always go back to this one.

2. Belo Essentials Smoothening Whitening Body Bar

I like the pink variant because it whitens and moisturizes at the same time. This soap actually provides no micropeeling and no significant whitening if used on its own, so I find it effective only when used after exfoliating soaps (like the "Sam Milby Soap" and Cyleina). The scent is very pleasant as well! Plus, I love it when Belo goes on sale at the local department/grocery store, because you can get three for the price of two!

3. Cyleina Organic Rice Bran Soap

This one I like not because it whitens, but because it exfoliates VERY WELL. I get itchy when I use it daily, so I limit myself to thrice a week at night (and lotion after)! My sister Dawn adores this soap - even considers it her HG "magic" soap - since it's very good at controlling bacne. I find it helps with eliminating ingrown hair too. So in a way, good exfoliation leads to better whitening results! Use a good whitening/smoothening lotion and you're good to go. You can find multiply sellers everywhere to buy Cyleina.

Cheers,
Trace

PS. So as to appease any possibility of mestiza-mentality-debate here in the blog - please take this post lightly. I don't have a problem if anyone else's preference is different from mine. I just happen to think I look better with fairer skin as opposed to being morena (in the same light that I prefer my hair straight over curly). OK? Peace out, folks. And do try the soaps, I hope they work for you. =)

  1. I really laughed at your mom's statement. :P

I loved rice bran too. It smells good and effective when it comes to exfoliation. :)

  2. Hahaha :) Yeah, she tells that to everyone. I was born the darkest out of the three of us.

Glad to know you like Cyleina. I don't like the other soaps, but 3-4 variants really work for my sis and I.

  3. Hey Trace! :) Yea I was nognog also when I was young, but mainly because I was a water baby. But now good sensibilities tell me to apply sunblock every so I am lighter (tho that hasn't stopped me from going to the beach, hrhrhr) My fave soap naman is Mediherbs and I reviewed it on my blog as well :) I also use Dermablend on the side :)

  4. Hi Kira! :) I'm not fond of beaches so I guess my being dark-skinned to light-skinned is more miraculous when I think about it. Haha!

I don't wear sunblock (bad I know)! I get too lazy sometimes, and I hate the stickiness.

I'll try mediherbs because you suggested it ;)

  5. I got burned when I did community work in Bats when I was in college. Too bad I wasn't subscribed to beauty blogs and had no knowledge whatsoever of effective whitening products then. It took a lot of months before my skin went back to it's natural color!

  6. Next time you know the solution dear! =) Haha! Cheers!

  7. I want to try these three soaps. I have been looking for a product that could help me whiten my skin tone. Especially on my feet since I wear flip flops most of the time and I have that V slipper mark on.

    Thanks for sharing! :)

  13. am I going to have white patches on skin if I use dermablend or belo? kasi po may mga pampapaputi na nagwawhite patch muna yung skin bago pumuti.

    ReplyDelete
I use it as expoliant, plus dove as moisturizer

  15. Hi sissies, I already tried different whitening products and treatments, and so far what I've got is an empty pocket. hehe. Until a friend recommend this Be White Gluta Plus Rosehips Skin Whitening Soap. I tried it after reading proofs from client testimonials and FAQs details. Now, I'm getting ready for summer and I think I'm getting whiter even after 1 week of persistent use. You can check out their page here http://www.facebook.com/bewhiteskin/ Hoping for the best results for all of you too.

  17. Nakakapute din ba ng underarm ang cyleina?

    ReplyDelete
  18. vanna - We haven't encountered getting patches in any of those soaps. :)

LorGie - Glad it works for you too! :D

    ReplyDelete
  19. Besides these three that we are using, we also like the local brands such as Snoe Beauty Bars and Myr and Ryvi! :)

I don't think cyleina can help in whitening underarms though. :(

  20. You guys sound like you don't like who you are, too close to black for you hah. Well I thinkphillipinos have a beautiful complexion and are exotic and what's the difference between Chinese and phillipine anyway this is so crazy to me. It's like phillipine people are not that dark and just because your skin is whiter doesn't make you better or prettier than anyone else, all lighter skinned people are not always pretty. I can see if your trying to fix some problem areas but to change who you are completely is something I'll never understand

  23. I was born and raised in the Philippines and now lives in the US. What's all this hype on skin whitening in the Philippines? This morena color that we have is the tan that Americans are so crazy about! Besides, have you thought about the long term side effects of this whitening? Let's develop our inner beauty more than the outside because that's all that really matters. Authentic Filipina beauty is always the kayumanggi or morena color and every Filipina should be proud of that color and not the Korean or Chinese color of skin. Just saying...

    1. I know what you mean. I like my skin to be morena too. This is Dawn by the way and not Tracy (who wrote this post). My guess is that people want something that they don't have. Pinays already have tanned features so why not make it lighter? It's a personal preference but the showbiz industry is a big influence in the concept of beauty. The mestizas and chinitas are usually the heroine/love interest in every show or movie that they became the standard of what's beautiful in our country. :/

  32. Hi! I was looking for a review for the new Belo Intensive bar and landed here. I'm intrigued by your review on Dermablend so I will also try that after using up my Belo bar (silly me for buying it before reading reviews, right? :D)

Also, I'm impressed by your disclaimer about women who prefer morena skin, and more importantly, what you said about 'mestiza mentality.' That was really thoughtful of you to consider the sentiments of our sisters who are comfortable in our natural Pinay skintone.

Because of that I bookmarked your blog for reference on beauty finds. Thanks! :)

  35. Hi there! I highly recommend Medi Herbs Papaya Soap, A Bonne Miracle Spa Milk Shower Salt and Block and White Papaya Lotion. It really works.
Many people compliment my milky white skin.. I'm not that fair-skinned when I was a kid, alaga lang sa whitening soaps and lotion.. Hehe

  36. I'm using Dermablend's guava soap. It really works in drying the pimples, I want to try the papaya variant too :)

  37. I bought two Belo Intensive Whitening soaps yesterday. (Yeah, it's different from your Belo soap but still they're in the same brand. Hehe!) I want to try it because most of my friends are using it and it really whitened their skins. They suggested me to try it also. I wish this will also be effective and have satisfying results on me just like on my friends and also to yours who uses the same soap brand. :-)

  38. helo po :) nabasa ko this morning yong review mo sa dermablend soap and na convince ako to try so I bought one in mercury drugstore. tanong ko lang po normal lang ba yong mag itch sa first use?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Hi Veralu! Hindi normal ang itch when it comes to soaps. My suggestion is magtest area ka na lang uli. Try the product sa isang part ng body mo lang muna and if nag continue yung itch, better to stop using it kasi baka irritated or allergic yung skin mo sa formula nung product. :(
